ADOPTION PROCESS

The Building Safety Division of the Economic and Community Development Department is currently working on the proposed adoption of the

2021 edition of the International Code Council (ICC) series of Codes, the 2020 edition of the NFPA National Electric Code, and amendments to the related chapters of the City Code. Proposed Codes to be adopted during this process include:

• 2021 International Building Code (IBC)

• 2021 International Residential Code (IRC)
• 2021 International Mechanical Code (IMC)
• 2021 International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC)
• 2021 International Fire Code (IFC)
• 2021 International (Illinois) Energy Conservation Code (IECC)
• 2021 International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC)
• 2021 International Existing Building Code (IEBC)
• 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC)
• Illinois State Accessibility Code (IAC) (Currently Adopted)
• 2014 Illinois Plumbing Code (Currently Adopted)
• 2020 National Electric Code (NEC) (Considering sections of the 2023 NEC)

The code adoption process will include Staff review of code changes; a series of meetings to discuss the changes with the Building Board of Appeals, and public engagement with various stakeholder groups. Formal implementation of the new Codes is anticipated on May 1, 2026.
